Australind Primary School has implemented a whole of school Aboriginal and Cultural Studies program which sees our Aboriginal Education Worker (AIEO) working alongside and mentoring teaching staff in the delivery of motivating activities for students in dedicated timeslots each week. These lessons specifically focus on Aboriginal languages, stories, art, and history. The AEIO has developed a scope and sequence to reflect our local community context and the Wardandi People. In addition, each year the school runs a community celebration during NAIDOC week and an excursion to a relevant local cultural site to embed the classroom learning.
By being available to all students, the program supports cultural understanding, acceptance and a proud connection for Aboriginal students and their families. Through up-skilling teachers, sustainable approaches are developed which will embed Aboriginal Cultural studies in the school for the long term. Please note this approach was commenced in 2018 and was recognised in the 2019 and 2023 Independent Public School Review as best practice.
